JAPAN

Japan was my first foreign land, and it had been calling me for a long time. I started with a three-week rail pass and traveled to the northern island of Honshu, then all the way down to the southern island of Kyushu before heading back to Tokyo. There I hoped to find a cheap place to stay (even in the early 1980s, housing and food were very expensive here) and a job. I earned so much teaching and modeling that I was able to travel for six months without working, and that was exactly what I had hoped for. Japan (Tokyo specifically) had a romance with something inside me, and I could not get enough of the language, the culture, the food or the amazing opportunities (especially for a blond, dyslexic Cinderella)!
